The Story Behind the Blog Called 'No Sound Mind'

Ever had a song stuck in your head? When you listen to music you're interpreting sound waves in your brain. Turn the sound waves off to find the energy in the music transposed, and still functioning in your mind...

The name No Sound Mind has been around since I was a 20 year old bohemian musician living in a basement apartment in Montreal. I used black electrical tape to spell out the words NO SOUND STUDIOS above my bedroom door. My first digital recording (Fjord EP) was produced there.

I soon after returned to university to study philosophy, and developed fragments of my own answers to traditional problems like Determinism vs. Free Will, What is God? What is the mind? Why are we here? And so on.

I also discovered Functionalism, a theory I consider provides our truest picture of the nature of the mind. It proposes that while the brain is home to thoughts and impulses, the mind is the configuration of the brain. In other words, the mind is a non-physical array of concepts forming the map behind the shape of the brain. The mind is like software running on the hardware of the brain, but also the outline of the configuration of the hardware. It's an elegant enough picture to mostly solve the age-old mind-body problem.

I propose that the arrangement and interplay of time, our physical environment, and the mind share a heretofore unknown energetic relationships, and that understanding more deeply the extent of the interplay between these three will lead to the heightening our ability predict and control the influence we are having on the physical world.

The picture of mind as a functional structure means that its function is also the only known bridge between the physical world and time. The structures of the mind are unique carriers of something theoretical I call The Force Of Function.

The name No Sound Mind is a metaphor for this mysterious force. In addition to providing us direction in the way of predicting outcomes, the study of this theoretical force could lead us to better understand the nature of energy, and may even provide new theoretical bases for determining a purpose for humanity more in tune with the nature of the universe.
